A machine for wafering hay and like forage crops from relatively wide previously formed and at least partly cured windrows in a field, comprising: a mobile frame 10 adapted to travel over the field parallel to the windrows and on which frame 10 are carried, crop pick-up means 16 of sufficient width W to span a windrow to pick up crops from such windrow and to move the crops rearwardly in a relatively wide stream into a crop narrowing means 18 comprising a pair of reversely wound augers 28, and crop transfer means 20 for feeding the crops from the narrowing means 18 to a crop wafering means 22; also comprises a container 24 for feeding water via a hose 168, a pump 166 and a hose 170 to a water distributing pipe 162 in proximity to the pick-means 16 for distributing water over a relatively wide area prior to movement of the crop stream beyond the pick-up means 16. The water distributing pipe 162 carries on its underside fan type nozzles to produce a curtain of water spray (Fig. 4, not shown). A tongue 14 of the frame 10 is used for connection to a tractor and the driven parts of the machine are powered by an internal combustion engine 26.
