PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for managing map data are provided to effectively manage map data stored in a memory of a vehicle navigation system by reducing data traffic. CONSTITUTION: A map data management apparatus(200) includes a central processing unit(210) for controlling an operation of the map data management apparatus(200), a vehicle location detector(220) for detecting a present position of a vehicle, a cell data acquisition unit(230) for acquiring cell data from map data, and a memory(240) for temporarily storing cell data obtained from the cell data acquisition unit(230). The central processing unit(210) process cell data stored in the memory(240) so as to display navigation information in a display device(250) of a vehicle navigation system(290). The vehicle location detector(220) receives a GPS signal from a GPS satellite.
