PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display is provided to realize an optimum gray display appropriate for a display mode by discriminating a moving picture and a still picture. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal panel(10) comprises a number of gate lines and a number of data lines crossing with the gate lines and a pixel formed on a crossing point of each gate line and each data line. A timing controller(50) performs the generation of a control signal needed in the liquid crystal panel and format conversion of image data by receiving the image data and a synchronous signal provided from an external graphic source. A gate driver(20) scans each gate line of the liquid crystal panel in sequence in 1 horizontal scan period unit. A data driver(30) arranges the image data provided from the timing controller(50) per data line on the liquid crystal panel, and selects a gray voltage appropriate for the image data, and applies the selected gray voltage to the pixel connected to the scanned gate line through each data line. An image discriminator(71) judges whether the image data is a moving picture display mode or a still image display mode. And a gray voltage generation part(60) generates a gamma reference voltage for still image and a gamma reference voltage for moving picture, and outputs the gamma reference voltage to the data driver(30) according to the display mode.
