FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method for preparing cationic surface-active substances based on substituted 2- alkylimidazolines of the formula (I) where R is alkyl, C16-C18-alkenyl. Method involves interaction of vegetable oils with beta-- hydroxyethylethylenediamine at temperature 160-175 C and in the mole ratio oil : beta-OEEDA = 1 : (3.2-3.6) for 3-3.5 h in inert gas medium, under residual pressure 60-15 mm of mercury column and under conditions of constant removal of reaction water. Quaternization of prepared imidazoline with ethylenechloro- hydrine is carried out at temperature 100-115 C in the mole ratio imidazoline : ethylenechlorohydrine = 1:1.5 for 2-2.5 h followed by distilling off excess of ethylenechlorohydrine under residual pressure 100- 20 mm of mercury column. Method expands raw base, reduces time for synthesis of imidazoline and provides preparing the end product without additional stages of purification and clearing.
