Paper-sizing composition includes agent and at least one hydrophobically modified water-soluble polymer with average-viscosity molecular weight about 20000 or less. Hydrophobic modification of polymer comprises introducing at least one side alkyl chain having at least about 8 carbon atoms. Polymer is cellulose ether, for example methylcellulose and hydroxypropylcellulose. Treatment of paper comprises adding above-indicated composition to paper near size press.
