PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the generation of smoke when a spark ignition type internal combustion engine is started when an engine temperature is low. SOLUTION: An electronic control unit (ECU) 35 corrects an ignition timing during cranking to be slower than that at a compression top dead point when the engine temperature is low, in accordance with the engine temperature of the spark ignition type internal combustion engine 11 or engine information corresponding thereto. In particular, the ignition timing is corrected to be much slower as the engine temperature is lower. It is corrected to be slower in this way to make combustion into a slower pace and suppress a tendency toward a higher temperature in a combustion site with the rise of a combustion temperature, resulting in smoke to hard to generate. Furthermore, it is effective to correct the ignition timing to be much slower with a lower engine speed (cranking rotating speed) during cranking or grant an air stream to a mixture in a cylinder 12 with the turn of an air stream control valve 41 to closed when the ignition timing is corrected.
