PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of reading a document image of high quality at all times by preventing a read image of a document from deteriorating in quality owing to foreign matter sticking on the document with simple constitution. SOLUTION: Foreign matter D sticking on a document P sent in a transport guide part 20 by a feed roller 14 is separated from the document P while pressed by a document pressure plate 22 and slid on a rear document glass 41b, and falls in an optical read unit 40 through a gap between the rear document glass 41b and a front document glass 41a, slides on the surface of a 1st mirror 43, and moves to a foreign matter storage member 61 to be stuck and held on an adhesive film 61a on the surface. The foreign matter D is therefore not present in an optical path facing an exposure read position during image reading operation of a document P based upon light from a light source 42, the light with which the document P at the exposure read position is irradiated and which is reflected from the document P and then reflected from a 1st mirror 43. Consequently, a decrease in read image quality is prevented which results from formation of black longitudinal stripes on the read image of the document image because of the presence of the foreign matter D in the optical path.
