The lid (30) on a piece of furniture, especially a cooker in a kitchen (32) may be swung up from a horizontal closed position to a vertical open position. The lid may include a grease filter (34). The hinge mechanism includes curved links (28) whose ends may move along fixed guide channels to allow edge of lid at hinge end to drop downward. The cooker has a hob (52) and a blower (35) which may be covered by the lid.
