PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a supporting mechanism for a cover capable of suppressing the movement of the cover when the cover is closed and of opening and supporting the cover by simple operation. SOLUTION: Just before the cover 11 is opened, a pinion gear 35 rides across build-ups 28a formed between the respective teeth of a rack gear 28. At this time, the pinion gear 35 is pushed up and moved vertically by the build-up 28a of the rack gear 28 and the pinion gear 35 is brought near to and intermeshed with a rotation restricting gear 38, by which the vertical movement of a strut 22 accompanying the rotation of the pinion gear 35 is suppressed. Therefore even if the hand is detached from the cover 11, the strut 22 does not move downward and the open state of the cover 11 is maintained. Even when the cover 11 is kept pushed down by an operator, the pinion gear 35 is intermeshed with the rack gear 28 of the rack guide 23 and the vertical movement of the strut 22 is suppressed and therefore the state in which the cover 11 is opened at an arbitrary open angle can be maintained.
