An apparatus (820, 920, 1004) for helping improve operation of a heart valve (826, 926, 1008) includes a generally arcuate base (844, 944) and a buttress (838, 938, 1018) extending generally from at least a portion of the base. Th e apparatus (820, 920, 1004) can be deformable to facilitate its implantation. When the apparatus (820, 920, 1004) is when implanted at an annulus (824, 92 4, 1006) of a heart valve, the buttress (838, 938, 1018) thereof cooperates wit h one or more leaflets (832, 932, 1014) of the heart valve to help control blo od flow relative to the apparatus and heart valve.
