PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent pixel data of invalid elements held by first and second sensors from being written to a memory in an image reader provided with an image sensor consisting of: the first and second sensors each with photodetectors arranged in one line; a first shift register for outputting pixel signals to all of the photodetectors of the first sensor and second; and a third shift register for outputting even number and odd number pixel signals of the photodetectors of the second sensor, respectively. SOLUTION: Pixel signals outputted from the first to third shift registers constituting a CCD linear image sensor 20 are selectively obtained with time division through an AFE 75, and the obtained pixel data are subsequently sampled by a data sampling block 44 and stored into the memory 70. The timing of the sampling is controlled in an obtained signal generation circuit 50, then, pixel data stored in the memory 70 are limited to pixel data of valid pixels outputted from each of the shift registers.
