PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect and release welding between a fixed contact and a movable contact. SOLUTION: This is an electromagnetic relay for high voltage and large current that comprises a yoke 46 which is arranged on the outside of a coil bobbin 41 and to which a core 45 is fixed, an armature 56 which is supported by a yoke 46 rotatably and is opposed to a core 45, a movable contact spring 50 of which one end is fixed to the yoke 46 and of which to the free end the armature 56 is fixed, a movable piece 63 which is fixed to the free end of the movable contact spring 50, and a movable contact 64 which is fixed to the movable contact piece 63 and is opposed to fixed contacts 24, 25. A welding detecting device 70 which detects the position of the armature 56 and detects welding between the fixed contact and the movable contact is installed, and further a welding releasing device 80 which energizes the movable piece 63 in the direction separating the movable piece 63 from the fixed contact and releases forcibly the welding of the fixed contact and the movable contact is installed.
