PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document retrieval method capable of executing retrieval by keyword accurately. SOLUTION: Segments Sa-Sd are established as units of managing documents in a computer system. Each of the segments contains global index tables GIa-GId in which a keyword, whereabouts information of the document in the segment, information on document holdings by neighboring segments. The index tables GIa-GId are referred to at the time of keyword retrieval and the whereabouts information of the document containing the keyword is extracted and a list of retrieval results is created. Retrieval by keyword is performed by following each segment based on the information on holdings by neighboring segments of the global index tables GIa-GId. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
