PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient development technique regarding improvement in the performance requirement of customers of the cylinder head gasket, shortening of a development period, and cost reduction. SOLUTION: A provisional trial gasket (1) is made at a basic design stage, and a gap sensor (9) is mounted in the provisional trial gasket. A strain measurement gauge (5) is mounted in the most upper part of the inner wall of a cylinder block (4). A means (6) to pressurize inside the cylinder is connected without driving the piston of the engine and the measurement data showing the change situation of the inner pressure of the cylinder is collected under the computer control. Behavior of the provisional trial gasket (1) is checked based on the collected data. The optimum design of an actual gasket is carried out using the optimized finite element model paying consideration the rigidity of the actual cylinder head to the specification of the initial stress in the gas seal part of the provisional trial gasket.
