PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus and an image recording method which enable an automatic discrimination of recording media with an easy and inexpensive arrangement without depending on insecure setting by users. SOLUTION: The paper size can be detected by the recording apparatus when a plurality of kinds of papers diverging in recording conditions and transfer direction sizes are inserted (step 9). Thus, the paper kind can be automatically discriminated, thereby enabling images to be recorded by recording conditions specific to each paper (steps 10 and 11). COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
