The invention relates to the first-time coating of substrates or to the repair of coatings on substrates. According to said method: (i) at least one liquid coating substance is applied in at least one operation to at least one surface of a substrate (in the case of a first-time coating), or to and/or into coatings (in the case of a repair) and (ii) the resultant layer or layers of the coating substance or the repaired areas are partially cured (gelled), (iii) the gelled layer, layers or repaired areas are then fully cured. Said method is characterised in that (1) it uses at least one coating substance, which can be cured by actinic radiation and contains at least one photoinitiator, whose spectral absorption extends into the visible range or lies entirely in the visible range, (2) the applied layer, layers or repaired areas are gelled using actinic radiation from radiation sources (A), whose spectral emission maximum lies in the visible range, and (3) the gelled layer, layers or repaired areas are fully cured using actinic radiation from radiation sources (A) and/or radiation sources (B), whose spectral emission maximum lies in the ultraviolet range.
