PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic light emitting diode display unit capable of providing a minimum peripheral contrast ratio necessary for both indoor observation and outdoor observation. SOLUTION: In this organic light emitting diode display unit, a peripheral contrast ratio in peripheral illumination exceeding 6,000lux is higher than 10 for an average power of 100mW per square centimeter. The device may comprise organic light emitting diodes each having one or more metal electrodes defining a periodic grid structure capable of supporting the surface plasmon-out-coupling of light from the organic light emitting diodes.
