PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize the efficiency of letter discrimination processing concerning a letter discriminating method for discriminating whether a letter to be discriminated is the same as a reference letter by using an image processing technology. SOLUTION: A normalized correlation value xp between a reference letter pattern and its vertical inversion pattern, a normalized correlation value yp between the reference letter pattern and its horizontal inversion pattern, and a normalized correlation value zp between the reference letter pattern and its point symmetrical pattern are calculated. A normalized correlation value xq between a letter to be discriminated pattern and its vertical inversion pattern, a normalized correlation value yq between the letter to be discriminated pattern and its horizontal inversion pattern, and a normalized correlation value zq between the letter to be discriminated pattern and its point symmetrical pattern are calculated. In this case, P(xp, yp, zp), Q(xq, yq, zq) are defined as points in a three-dimensional space, and when a distance L between P and Q is L≤LTH (letter discrimination threshold), it is judged that the letter to be discriminated is the same as a reference letter.
