A laser power decision method includes a step of recording a test signal on a recording medium and reproducing it, a step of calculating a first parameter as a function of difference between the reproduction signal amplitudes A0 and A1, a second parameter as a function of difference between the reproduction signal amplitudes A1 and As, a third parameter as a function of difference between the reproduction signal jitters Js and J1, and a fourth parameter as a function of difference between the reproduction signal AA0 and AA1, a step of calculating the value of the first parameter corresponding to the second parameter when the third parameter is equal to an allowable value so as to decide a critical parameter, and a step of making the recording power corresponding to the fourth parameter an optimal recording power when the fourth parameter is equal to or below the critical parameter.
