The invention relates to membrane electrode units comprising two electrochemically active electrodes which are separated by means of a polyme r electrolyte membrane. A polyimide layer is provided on the two surfaces of t he polymer electrolyte membrane, which are in contact with the electrodes. The inventive membrane electrode units can be used especially for producing fuel cells with particularly high long-term stability.
