<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material and a cobalt oxide particle powder which is its precursor and which can be used for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery whose safety characteristics and, in particular, heat stability are improved by stabilizing a crystal structure in an insertion reaction of the positive electrode active material for the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery. <P>SOLUTION: The composition of the positive electrode active material for the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is denoted as LiCo<SB>(1-x)</SB>Mg<SB>x</SB>O<SB>2</SB>(0.001≤x≤0.15) and its mean particle diameter is 1.0-20 μm. a-Axis of the lattice constant is denoted as 0.090x+2.816<a≤0.096x+2.821(Å) and c-axis of the lattice constant is denoted as 0.460x+14.053<c≤0.476x+14.063(Å). The positive electrode active material for the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery can be obtained by mixing a cobalt oxide particle which contains magnesium or whose surface is treated with magnesium hydroxide with a lithium compound and by heat treatment. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
