KNEE PROTECTING AIR BAG SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a knee protecting air bag system capable of accurately protecting a crew's knees without inhibiting weight reduction by keeping an expanding air bag out of a gap between its cover and the interior furnishing member.

SOLUTION: The knee protecting air bag system S is so designed as to inject an expansion gas from an inflator 62 into an air bag 73 collapsed and stored in a housing 22 having an opening facing the rear side of the vehicle to push open the door 57 of an air bag cover 46 attached to the housing 22. The interior furnishing member 19b of the vehicle is arranged around the air bag cover 46 separately therefrom. The door 57 comprises an upper door 58, which opens at least upward. The upper door 58 is designed to have such dimensions that it can cover the gap formed between the interior furnishing member 19b and the air bag cover 46 when the upper door 58 is opened by expansion of the air bag 73.
