PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially efficiently obtain a tribromoacetic acid halide. SOLUTION: A method for producing the tribromoacetic acid halide comprises a step for producing the tribromoacetic acid halide by reacting tribromoacetic acid with a halogenating agent in an organic solvent. The organic solvent is preferably used in an amount of≥50 pts. wt. based on 100 pts. wt. tribromoacetic acid. The reaction temperature is preferably 65-80°C. The method for producing the tribromoacetic acid halide may comprise a step for distilling off the organic solvent from a reaction mixture at≤80°C and obtaining the tribromoacetic acid halide as a distillation residue. According to the production method, the tribromoacetic acid halide having≤2 wt.% content of debrominated substances as impurities can be obtained. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
