The flat fire retarding material (2a,2b,3a,3b) transits from a solid state into a flowing condition in a fire. The material is a vertical layer on a flat and porous carrier (1), and has at least one further porous carrier (4,5). The carriers are woven fabrics of filaments which resist temperatures, e.g. of glass or ceramics. Fibers (6) are integrated into the structure to give coherence to the layers, in a fiber length of at most10 mm and especially at most5 mm and preferably 3 mm. In the event of a fire, the layers expand, and increase the gap between the carriers.
