A system for the rapid and safe closure of ducts and openings, e.g. fire and explosion proofing of tunnels, has inflatable sections (3) which assume a predetermined shape when inflated and which close off an access either singly or in conjunction with similar units. The system operates similar to an airbag system in automobiles and is normally stored in a compact folded state under protective covers (2) which are sprung open by the inflation. The system is inflated by remote control using compressed gasses or by pyrotechnic gasses. The system can be fitted with emergency exit flaps which automatically close again after a person has slipped through.
