<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently consume toner and prevent image defects by making the lengths of images formed in an image non-print area different in accordance with an image print rate when performing a refresh operation in an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: When the surface of a developer carrier is refreshed, an AC development bias voltage for refreshing which has a predetermined frequency, is applied to the developer carrier. In this case, the phase of the AC development bias for refreshing is controlled according to the image print density. For instance, the timing of the application of the AC development bias for refreshing and the timing of the cutoff of the AC development bias for refreshing is controlled according to the image print density. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
