<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating material which is improved in heat resistance and chemical durability by high-temperature drying, thus being prevented from the occurrence of defects such as cracks; a honeycomb structure which has an outer wall formed from the coating material and an improved mechanical strengths against thermal stress; and a production method thereof. <P>SOLUTION: The honeycomb structure 1 is prepared by forming an outer wall 5 on the peripheral surface of a cell structure 2 by applying thereto a coating material containing inorganic fibers, a colloidal oxide, inorganic particles, and at most 30 wt% water, followed by drying provided that the inorganic fibers have an average axial direction length of 10-100 μm and an average radial direction length of 1-20 μm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
