PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of updating data for shading correction, which can obtain image data faithful to an original by improving the accuracy of a shading correction, reduce the number of updating times by omitting unneeded update of correction data and shorten the time needed to read an image. SOLUTION: This method of updating data for shading correction is for updating data for correction obtained (S6) by reading a reference member irradiated with light from a light source (S5) and applying shading correction to image data read from the original as occasion demands. The quantity of light emitted on the reference member from the light source is detected (S1), and whether the detected quantity of light is within the range of prescribed quantity of light is determined or not (S2, 3 and 4). Unless the determination result is within the quantity of light, data for correction is updated (S5 and 6) and if the determination result is within the range of the quantity of light, the data for correction are not updated.
