PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen storage material having high hydrogen storage capacity at a normal temperature. SOLUTION: The hydrogen storage capacity at a normal temperature is increased by mixing a hydrogen storage alloy with a carbon material carrying one or more kinds of metals selected from group VIII transition metals to activate the group VIII transition metal carried on the carbon material by the heat energy released in the storage of hydrogen in the hydrogen storage alloy and to accelerate the storage of hydrogen into the carbon material by the dissociation of the hydrogen molecule to atomic hydrogen.
