<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new optical compensation sheet with a superior optical compensating function, an optical compensation sheet which especially contributes to improvement of the viewing angle of a liquid crystal display device of a TN mode etc. <P>SOLUTION: The optical compensation sheet has a transparent base and an optical anisotropic layer. The optical anisotropic layer has hybrid alignment of discotic liquid crystal wherein the tilt angle increases from the base toward the other surface. The optical anisotropic layer contains at least one kind of compounds represented by general formulas (Ia) and (Ib). Here, Hb and Hc are alkyl groups, Bu and BU<SP>1</SP>substituents including two or more ring structures, L a bond group with a valence (m+n), L<SP>1</SP>a bond group with a valence (p), and L<SP>2</SP>a single-bond or divalent bond group.
