PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning method which sufficiently inhibits occurrence of stain on the surface of a steel sheet to be plated. SOLUTION: This cleaning method comprises a step of electrolytically alkaline-cleaning the steel sheet to be plated, with the use of a cleaning solution which contains sodium hydroxide and/or potassium hydroxide, and a chelating compound having at least one nitrogen atom and at least three carboxyl groups, in each particular range, at a solution temperature of 50-75°C.
