The invention relates to a burst modulator unit or a network interface comprising one such unit for a two-way data transmission system, provided with a burst controller (7), an FEC coder (10), a burst modulator (11), and a time recovery unit (6). In order to simplify the network interface and improve the operability of the burst modulator (11) in data transmission systems having different transmission standards, the burst controller (7), the FEC coder (10), the burst modulator (11), and the time recovery unit (6) are embodied as a structural unit on an IC, communicating with a MAC control unit (17) via a standard interface (22).
