The oil sump (1) has an oil pump (4) to supply oil for lubrication and cooling, and a suction jet pump (6) to supply the sump. The suction jet pump sucks oil from a region (7) of the crankcase (2) acting as oil sump buffer, so that when the crankcase is at an angle preventing oil being supplied, sufficient oil is retained in the sump.
