PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display of gradation and display at a high speed with low electric power consumption possible by controlling the coloring states at respective pixels to adequate states. SOLUTION: The method for driving the display device comprises displaying images by impressing prescribed voltages to the respective pixels and precipitating and dissolving metal. The voltage pulses or AC voltages having the amplitude below the threshold at which the metal precipitates are added and writing pulses or erasing pulses are controlled according to the current values flowing at this time. Otherwise writing is performed and thereafter the additional writing pulses are added when the current values fall down to the prescribed values or below.
