PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader capable of reading an image of a carried document without being influenced by stains of a support means in a state wherein the space between the support means for the document and a conveyance path forming means nearby a read position is kept in a desirable range of 0.5 to 1.0 mm and a reading optical means is stationary. SOLUTION: A 1st scanning unit 12 reads and detects the front end position of a guide member 73. The stop position of the 1st scanning unit 12 is set within a range of a specified distance L at which a 2nd contact glass 16 is previously obtained not to be stained with a document from a position opposite to the front end position of the guide member 73. In a travel read mode, the 1st scanning unit 12 is moved to and stopped at the set position and the document is read. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
