PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device which can be made smaller in size, higher in luminance and better in cooling efficiency and a projector provided therewith. SOLUTION: An optical device 44 is provided with an optical modulator 440, a color synthesizing optical device 444, and an optical transducer 443 and the optical modulator 440 and the optical transducer 443 are respectively independently connected through a thermally conductive material to a pedestal 445 consisting of a thermally conductive material disposed at the optical device 444, by which the heat generated by each other between the optical modulator 440 and the optical transducer 443 is radiated toward the pedestal 445 of a greater heat capacity without flowing backward. The cooling efficiency of the optical device 44 can be thereby improved and the dealing with the trend toward the smaller size and higher luminance of the optical device 44 and the projector is made possible.
