A water-soluble polymer having a molecular weight of at least 50,000 and containing at least 50 mole per cent of units of the formula <FORM:1056792/C3/1> wherein A is a C2-C3 alkylene group having at least two carbon atoms extending in a chain between the adjoined N atoms and R is hydrogen or a methyl group is obtained by reacting a polymer of acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile, containing at least 50 mole per cent of nitrile units, with a diamine of the formula H2NANH2, where A is as defined above. Aqueous solutions of the above polymers and of salts thereof are also described. The preparation of the polymers may be carried out using the diamine as liquid medium, or in the presence of a solvent or a non-solvent using as catalyst sulphur or a sulphur containing compound. In Examples 1 and 2 polyvinylimidazoline is obtained by reacting ethylene diamine with polyacrylonitrile. In Examples 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 ethylene diamine is reacted with acrylonitrile/ ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile/styrene, acrylonitrile/ acrylamide, acrylonitrile/vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile/vinyl butyl ether copolymers respectively. Example 8 relates to the reaction between ethylene diamine and polymethacrylonitrile and Examples 9 and 10 relate to the use of 1,3-propanediamine and polyacrylonitrile. |
