The UV light source comprises rod-shaped conductor (1) in inner tube (2) of insulating material. The inner tube is fitted in outer tube (4) of UV transparent material, with tube end sealed to form container for ionizable gas. Steps are taken to increase the inner surface (9) of container. Pref. the inner surface of outer and of inner tube, is roughed, typically grooved. There may be one or more tubes of UV transparent material located in container. Independent claims are included for sterilizer of flowing media.
