The engine operating method involves determining the pressure in a combustion chamber (14) of at least one cylinder (12) at least for a period during operation of the internal combustion engine (10) using a pressure sensor (30), determining the maximum value of the pressure in the combustion chamber that occurs during a working stroke in which the cylinder is not carrying out any work. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a computer program for implementing the inventive method (b) a control and/or regulating device for operating an internal combustion engine (c) and an internal combustion engine with an inventive control and/or regulating device.
