<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission system which realizes transmission without degradation of transmission characteristics due to the temperature fluctuation of distributed slopes. <P>SOLUTION: The optical transmission system has a transmission system 11 which generates an optical signal, optical fibers 12-1 to 12-n for transmission, and a reception system 15 which receives the optical signal. Let a tolerable secondary wavelength dispersion fluctuation value by which a bit error rate becomes below a prescribed value be ±ΔD<SB>0</SB>17, temperature change which the optical fibers for transmission receives be ΔT, the entire length of the optical fibers for transmission be L, the wavelength band of the optical signal be Δλ and a dispersion slope temperature coefficient being a value of the dispersion slopes which changes per 1°C of the optical fibers for transmission be α<SB>T</SB>.
