Dichlorobutenes are isomerized into other dichlorobutenes by contacting them with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal halide, ammonium halide or cupric halide containing a cuprous salt. Specified starting compounds are 1,4-dichlorobutene-2 and 3,4-dichlorobutene-1. Preferred salts for use in the aqueous solution are NaCl, NH4Cl or CuCl2, and CuCl or CuBr. Preferably the solution is maintained at pH 3-7.3 by addition of a buffer salt and/or acid binding agent, e.g. sodium or ammonium acetate or cupric acetate; or NaOH, CuCO3 or hydrated copper oxide. Preferred contact temperature is 20-60 DEG C. |
