PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner improving its air conditioning feeling in a frost preventing operation mode of an indoor heat exchanger in cooling operation, and to provide the frost preventing method for the indoor heat exchanger in the air conditioner. SOLUTION: In this air conditioner comprising the indoor heat exchanger performing the heat exchange between the indoor air and the refrigerant supplied from an outdoor machine unit, a compressor for compressing the refrigerant, and a control part for controlling the compressor, and having "indoor heat exchanger frost preventing operation mode" for preventing the frost of the indoor heat exchanger in cooling operation, the indoor heat exchanger has a front condition detecting means for detecting a frost condition, and the control part can select the compressor operation control modes of two or more stages in accordance with a detection value of the frost condition detecting means in the "indoor heat exchanger frost preventing operation mode".
