PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pickling tank for pickling a metal strip neither too much nor too little even when a passing speed of the strip and a temperature of an acid solution vary, and for causing no fretting scar on a passing sheet material to be pickled even when the tension varies in the pickling tank, and to provide a pickling method. SOLUTION: The pickling tank 1 comprises several rolls 8a and 8b capable of moving up and down arranged side by side in a sheet passing direction 12, in the tank and above and below a passage 11 of the metal strip, an elevator 13 for moving the upper and lower rolls up and down, and an elevation control unit 14 for controlling a movement of the elevator. The pickling method is characterized by adjusting the space between the surface of the passing metal strip 10 and the upper roll, and the space between the back side of the metal strip and the lower roll, according to a temperature T of an acid solution and the passing speed u of the strip, so as to match a proper boundary thicknessδa, with the use of the above pickling tank.
