The method involves moving a valve needle of an injection valve from a closed position to an open position with a piezoelectric actuating element subjected to a drive signal (SA). The drive signal has a steeper edge gradient (SZ) for the transition of the valve needle from the closed position to an intermediate position than for the transition (ZO) from the intermediate position to the open position.
