A suture anchor (30) for approximating tissue to bone comprises an anchor member (32) for securing the suture anchor (30) to the bone and a plurality of sutures (46) mounted to the anchor member (32) so that the sutures (46) exte nd outwardly from the anchor member (32). Each suture (46) has a sharp pointed end (54, 56) and a plurality of barbs (48) which permit movement of the sutures (46) through the tissue in one direction of movement of the pointed end (54, 56) and prevent movement of the sutures (46) relative to the tissue in the opposite direction. The ends (54, 56) of the sutures are inserted and pushed through the tissue along a curvilinear path in a direction away from the bone. The exit and entry points of two of the sutures (46) are adjacent and the paths of the sutures (46) substantially mirror one another.
