<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fault detecting apparatus eliminating the need for a particular circuit to detect a fault in a transmitter or a receiver. <P>SOLUTION: Mobile stations 203<SB>1</SB>to 203<SB>N</SB>inform a base station 202 of their transmission and reception powers and the base station 202 gives information as to the respective transmission and reception powers leading to the base station 202 to a fault detection section 218. The fault detection section 218 obtains uplink and downlink propagation losses of transmission paths 204<SB>1</SB>to 204<SB>N</SB>and discriminates a fault of any transmitter or receiver depending on its mode when the differences exceed a prescribed permissible range.
