PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device capable of reducing time for AF search, and also capable of detecting a focal point with a higher degree of precision in fine tuning, while reducing the time for the AF search in rough tuning, compared with the current image pickup devices. SOLUTION: While moving a focus lens 116a for rough tuning, sampling of contrasts is performed at rough intervals by an AF detection circuit 130 to detect an approximate focal point. Next, moving a focus lens 117a for fine tuning, the focal point is efficiently detected in the AF detection circuit 130. This invention is characterized in that the larger the focal point moving distance in relation to an unit moving distance of the focus lens for rough tuning is, the greater is the effect of time reduction, and that the smaller the focal point moving distance to the unit moving distance of the focus lens 117a for fine tuning is, the higher is the degree of the precision of the focal point.
