A material coated with a thin ceramic film having a graded composition, characterized in that it comprises a substrate and a thin ceramic coating film comprising a composite phase of a first phase having a silicon based ceramic component as a primary component and a second phase having a ceramic component having a composition except that of the first phase as a primary component, wherein the percentage of the presence of fine crystal particles of at least one ceramic component constituting the second layer increases in a graded way towards a surface layer; and a method for producing the material. The material exhibits an excellent functional property such as a photocatalyst function, an electric function, a thermal catalyst function or a catalyst carrying function, or high resistance to circumstances such as the resistance to oxidation, an alkali, or abrasion, in combination with excellent mechanical characteristics.
