The actuator has front and/or rear brakes actuated hydraulically or via cable pull. A compact coaxial modular unit fitted to the right side of a crank shaft consists of drive element (1), limited relatively turnable take-off element (2), and brake actuator element (3). A turnable ratchet element (4) located eccentrically on the take-off element, is operated by the drive element via a carrier element (5) to lock into or release the brake actuator. The ratchet element is loaded in release direction by a return spring, the actuator element is loaded by a return spring relative to the bicycle frame. A brake momentum generated by a brake unit (7) is active between take-off and actuator elements.
