PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a long-life and high-reliability high pressure discharge lamp capable of suppressing crack or leakage generated at a sealing part by suppressing the degeneracy of a metal pipe caused by sealed halogen, and a lighting device mounting the discharge lamp. SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp L1 comprises a translucent ceramic discharge container 1 having a pair of cylindrical parts 12, 12 with small diameter formed at both ends of a round part 11 forming a discharging space; metal pipes 2 of which, at least the surface contacting with the inner surface of the container 1 is composed of halogen resistant metal or ceramics, airtightly adhered to the cylindrical parts 12, 12 with small diameter through an adhesion layer 3; metal brazing material 5 airtightly sealing the outer end part of the metal pipes 2, holding an end part of an electrode structure 4 having an electrode 41 which is inserted into the metal brazing material; and discharging media containing halogen compound sealed in the discharge container 1.
